The financial downside is in having to buy the additional set of tyres plus the cost of say some$ per wheel to have them fitted and balance for mud plus another 50 quid to have them removed in spring and the normal tyres refitted. In the long term it’s probably cheaper to buy a spare set of wheels and simply swap wheels whenever the temperature plummets. Luckily we can choose whether or not to indulge in this expense and hassle.
But we’ll have no choice of winter tyres are made a legal requirement in the Europe. The trade will be rubbing its hands at the thought of selling that fist set to absolutely everyone. One tyre supplier says on its website. What will it take to kick start the winter tyre market? Er shouldn’t that be what will it take to get people driving on safer tyres? But I’m being naïve to suggest there’s anything more to this than simply selling tyres.
