The 2.4 TDCi pulled only 25mpg and the sound from its CD player was slaughtered by an over intrusive combination of wind noise and audio mechanical effects. Yet the fun factor in this machine overruled everything.
The irony is that the allegedly practical Defender I tested shortly afterwards had not the hallmarks of a practical utility machine, but of a lavish toy whose ownership is a luxury. Odd vehicle, really. The Defender XS boasts heated leather seats, air conditioning, six gears gusty ford 2.4 TDCi engine, and quit and stable cruising at high motorway speed.
For sheer lifestyle, the Defender beats Range Rover and Rollers hand down, a point not lost on score of 90 and 110 drivers, with worm I exchanged knowing waves and grins during the400 mils test. It reminds me that driving a Defender gives instant membership to a huge, friendly club of likeminded people.
