The old One Ten station wagon struggles to get a grip, slides sideways a bit, and then its skinny Michelin 7.50 cut down through the rotting foliage and we have slowly forward. No wheel spin. What with two and quarter engine. The early 80’s naturally aspirated diesel has low down torque, and that’s what we need. You think only a tracked vehicle would get out of here, but we plough up through the undergrowth, shrug aside a few sapling and lurch back on to the dirt track. Even through experienced off road drivers it’s the vehicle that impresses.
There’s a feeling of smug satisfaction as the One Ten proves it’s still up to the job. And if that up and out ability is necessary here in work shop, think how much more essential it must have been in 1984 when this vehicle was new. Back then, One Ten was doing the same thing, hacking its way through a forest.
