THE RIGHT WAY WITH DEFENDER

Driving Land Rover Defender through water can look spectacular I am the first admit that. But that doesn’t stop me from winching every time. I see a Land Rover Defender at an off road driving day go crashing into a pool at speed, water cascading into every known and unknown orifice in the vehicle.

Like any other aspect of off road driving there’s right way and a wrong way to go wading the wrong way having the potential to cause all spots of expensive damage to engine and running gear. From the outset, I should make clear that wading doesn’t mean just pool and rives you can displace massive amounts of water just by driving through deep ruts that have become well filled after heavy rain.
So when you go off road, you should be prepared for everything and that include water. If you drive a petrol engine Land Rover, be aware that there electrics are a lot more vulnerable to water ingress than diesels. Before you venture out, spray the electrics liberally with WD40 or similar, check the coil and cover up the distributor.
