AXLE SEALS FOR RANGE ROVER

Different stub axle seal arrangements been used over the years. On the late Classic Range Rovers the rear axles half shaft has a raised machined land on which the stub shaft seal inner lip presses to keep the hub oil tight.
The hub and stud shaft have to be removed to reach the seal. So while those parts are dismantled, it makes sense to renew the hub’s inner oil seal, and its good time to check the brake pad too. If replacing the stub shaft seal on the both sides on the axle, the first step is to drain the axle oil at the plug underneath the differential housing.
The right hand axle shaft on the Range Rover showed no sign of seal failure, so there was no need to drain the oil. Simply jacked up the left side of the axle casing and placed it on an axle stand so that it was highest on that side to prevent oil escaping.
