HOW TO DRIVE SAND AND SNOW

The fact that winter tyrs aren’t mandatory in the United Kingdom despite our justified obsession with road safety suggest they’re unnecessary here. There is the political consideration though. The party in government that makes them a legal requirement and thus forces us to shell out several hundred pounds on winter tyers just before Christmas, and all that isn’t going to do much for its popularity ratings, even though tyre manufacturers may subsequently praise the government on its sound judgment and leadership.
Tread variations in winter tyres are designed to deal with snow and water on the road though standard tyres are also designed with this hazard in mind. Avon’s ranger ice for example, has a serrated snow from them.
I reckon there’s reasonable case for fitting winter tyres if you’re driving around the Europe or in mountainous regions. But we should be allowed to use our discretion in deciding whether they’re appropriate, not forced into fitting en masse.
