RANGE ROVER ENGINE CONTROL

The DDE system uses the standard format.  the ECM (engine control module) receive signal from sensors around the engine and use pre programmed data in its microprocessors to determine the best fuelling set up for the current engine requirements. It than sends signals to the various engine controls to fuel the engine in the most efficient way. In this way the ECM controls both the timing and the quantity and fuel injected, the engine speed, running efficiency and smoothness, fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. It also provides engine overheat protection and cruise control.
Certain faults within the engine system are recorded by the ECM and can be read by connecting to the vehicle’s diagnostic socket. The ECM can also activate dashboard warning. The second generation P 38 Range  Rover 2.5 litre straight six cylinder diesel control system uses similar principles, as do many other diesel powered vehicles of the era. The P38’s system is known as digital diesel electronic (DDC) and, like the 300 Tdi, its primary function is to control the fuelling of the engine to best suit the condition prevailing at any one time.
