REAR AXLE FOR 300 TDI DISCOVERIES

When working on your Land Rover 300 Tdi Discovery noticed that the seal at the inside of the left hand stub shaft which is supposed to stop the axle oil leaking into the hub had failed.

It’s fairly common for these to wear out, though not so easy to detect you might see oil seeping out from the drive shaft flange if its gasket is poor. In the case the seal had unseated itself from the back of the stub shaft. That may be due to age, or it might have been pushed out by accident.
A blocked axle casing breather pipe might also damage a seal through build up of pressure in the axle casing. So check that your breather is clear. Whatever the cause, failure of the stub axle inner seal enables axle oil to enter the hub where it contaminates the grease required to lubricate the wheel bearing.
