The best way is to fit a purpose made power steering conversion kit from (any Land Rover work shop). Any Land Rover or Range Rover the power assisted steering system can be adapted to the series III, but this is a long and complex job and its very important to be able to confirm that the parts are safe and serviceable in the first place. System had been adapted from other vehicles, often without considering whether or not the components are capable of the loads and stresses imposed on them. TO convert using parts from other beam axel Land Rovers you’ll need the steering column, steering box, pump and hydraulic hoses from the donor vehicle. Considerable cutting and welding is needed to fabricate and fit the mounting brackets for the PAS pump and steering box, and this fabrication needs to be carried out accurate by an accomplished welder.
You’ll also need to remove the Land Rover’s front wing and radiator to gain proper access for the conversion. Unless you have the engineering skill to get it absolutely right, I would recommend using the kit described above, which is a relatively simple bolt on conversion. This route is considerably more costly than using parts from a donor vehicle, though.
