The aluminum cylinder head was possibly the most complex part of the engine. Instead of individual pipes feeding the injectors, fuel was circulated through galleries inside the head casting.
The head ports, through which inlet air and exhaust would flow, were developed in conjunction with Austrian consultancy AVL. They helped them get the right characteristics of the inlet port to give us the correct air movement, and helped with injector nozzle hole size and spray angles.
The final part of the combustion system is the bowl in the piston crown where the interacts with fuel and gives the clean mixing they needed. You have to have a system where the injector bowl and port cooperate over a wide range of speeds and loads so the engine is always running efficiently, giving good performance without high emissions.’
