Even Land Rover was feeling the bite as foreign 4x4s steadily encroached on its export markets. Despite being the golden goose among a flock of lame ducks, Land Rover saw little of its profits as they were creamed off to prop up Leyland’s poor range of cars.
By mid decade, it was clear that Land Rover needed to produce a more powerful engine, to replace the unsuccessful and unreliable old six cylinder petrol. As the Series III Stage 1 V8 development engineer explains, the six cylinders were tired and not always as reliable as it should have been. It was a very good engine for people who used it for personal transport, but it proved less reliable in the hand of utility companies and authorities, who worked them really hard.
