OFF ROAD PREP

Reliability is the first priority in engine preparation. Second is protection against abrasive watery mud that gets in everywhere.  Take special care of turbocharger inlet pipes and connections. Gritty water splashed into this area will seriously damage the turbo.

Electric fan will reduce water splash on to engine if switched off but don’t leave it off too long, and watch the temperature gauge. Check rear axle shafts for corrosion and signs of twist splines. They’re simple to replace if you can the broken end out.
If axle seals let water in, drive splines corrode away. These rusted TD5 front shaft splines sheared off, resulting in no drive. Remove and shake Series and early Range rover axle breather valve to hear ball ratting inside. If stuck, strip and clean them.
Grease propshaft universal and slide joints until grease oozes out. Water has less chance of getting in there if it’s packed with grease. Spilt gaiters on Freelander drive shafts will allow abrasive mud and corrosive water to reach the expensive CV joints. So check them.
