INSIDE THE TURBO

There’s no point in stripping the turbo for maintenance, its specialist job. But we’ll strip this one just so we can take a look inside. We start unbolting the cast iron exhaust outlet which connects the downpipe from the turbine casing at the rear.

That exposes the exhaust turbine and circular waste gate flap valve which allow exhaust gas to bypass turbine. After disconnecting the actuator rod (lower left) from the waste gate lever, the lever can be turned by hand to open the waste gate.

The air hose is removed, then the actuator unbolted. The actuator rod has a threaded section and locknut for adjusting the boost. Compressor casing is lifted off after removing the rear circlip (special tool needed). All that black stuff is burnt oil from the breathers.
