The Series diesel system uses lift pump mounted on the engine block to draw fuel from the tank and supply it to the CVU type distributor injection pump via the main fuel filter on the bulkhead filters are also fitted in the lift and distributor pumps.
The injection pump pressurizes the fuel and distributes it in time with the piston movement to each cylinder injector in turn. The injectors are held closed by their internal springs, the fuel pressure of around 135bar 200psi overcomes the spring to exit from the injector nozzle in a predetermined pattern.
The Series diesels are indirect injection engines in which the fuel is injected into a swirl chamber inside the cylinder head, which has an opening leading into the cylinder. Ignition takes place in the swirl chamber, blasting out to drive the piston down. Excess fuel in the injector supply pipe is returned to the tank.
