ANSWER VISCOUS COUPLINGS

The differential would not have been cured by simply tightening the nut on the roller bearing. Setting this bearing is a quit lengthy and involved process if it is to be done properly and remain reliable. If the bearing is noisy, it will need to be replaced. The Freelander is theoretically in permanent four wheel drive, though most drive is to be the front wheels, with only eight per cent originally to the rears during normal driving.
Drive to the front wheel through the intermediate reduction drive (IRD) is permanent and fixed, but drive to the rear wheels is via the viscous coupling unit (VCU), which is variable. The VCU contains a row of slotted disc rotors, alternately attached to the input shaft and the outer casing, and revolving in a silicone jelly like fluid. The rotors attached to the input shaft are driven by the front prop, whose speed is dictated by the IRD.
