TD5 in Discovery or Defender is a superb performance for cruising toeing and off roading. Servicing is simple and accessible, and computer diagnostics were needed only when a fault occurs. These usually identify problems more quickly than conventional fault tracing, saving time and money.
Problems can be avoided by proper use, good maintenance and attending to any fault as they arise. Cylinder heads tend to crack at number one inlet port and around the injector seats, though only if the engine is allowed to overheat.
Early problems of head location to the block face were eliminated by replacing plastic locating dowels with steel. Engine oil can leak along the injector wiring harness (which is inside the engine top) and reach the ECU where it can cause cylinder misfiring. A clean, and new seals, cures the problem, though dealers will also renew the harness.
