A notorious and unpredictable failure occurred on a few early engines in which the oil pump drive sprocket’s securing bolt loosened, leading to loss of oil pump drive and the problem appears to be eliminated. The bolt responsible for the catastrophe can be easily checked after removing the sump.
With proper maintenance, a TD5 is long lasting, but all engines eventually wear. The official line on reconditioning is that the block cannot be rebored, nor the crankshaft reground. There are good engineering reasons for this, and understandably Land Rover is keen to protect its reputation by deterring less professional reconditioners from turning out a bad job.
But, respected engine specialist Turner Engineering says that competent recondition who thoroughly understand the engine are successfully reboring cylinders and fitting undersize bearing to reground crankshaft choose your reconditioned carefully. Cylinder head faces can also be machined but over head also needs to be checked for cracks and true alignment of the camshaft bearing carriers.
