BRAKE PADS AND CLUTCHES

Asbestos was once the main friction material used in clutches and brakes. By the early Eighties most manufacturers had started to phase out this hazardous material and a total ban was enforced in October 1999. If you’re working a barn find Land Rover that’s not been out since 1980, for example, you could easily find asbestos parts on it. New old stock parts on your garage shelves could also contain asbestos.
Some parts will be marked with a small a to indicate that they contain asbestos, but we wouldn’t recommend, you go searching for this evidence. Unless you’ve changed the clutch or brake on a vehicle yourself, treat the parts with caution. Wear a dust mask, glove and overalls and dampen down the parts with brake cleaner before you start to remove them.
If the part to turn out to contain to dispose of them in any other way.
