TD5 CAMSHAFT DRIVE

Ten prototype engines were built for initial evaluation though none of the team was prepared for the results.
We have the so many problems that we ended up doing the most dramatic engine redesign we’ve ever done. We’d standard off driving the camshaft with the belt, but change over to chain which was a pretty drastic step. We also switched the crossflow cylinder head around so the air inlet and exhaust outlet swapped sides.
And we change the philosophy of how we cooled the cylinder block. Went for end to end flow to crossflow (in one side of the block out the other) to get better cooling between the bores. It’s quite difficult to design it so that it doesn’t all rush through the middle with the ends getting forgotten about.
It took a lot of detail design but, in the end, going to crossflow worked very well fitting the bores into the space we were given and ensuring good cooling head a big impact on the design.
