CHECK UNDERSIDE THE VEHICLE

Check excess swivel bearing play. With the axle on a stand, grasp the wheel at top and bottom of tyre, and rock it in a vertical arc, Squeeze and pull ball joint rubber boot and renew any that are spilt or cracked, otherwise water will soon corrode the joint.

Rock sliders protect sills from ground, though with slight loss of ground clearance. Also, remove side steps they’ll break up. Freelander has poor ground clearance. A rear silencer guard is worthwhile investment. Also consider a two inch suspension lift kit

Keep wheel bearings and their seals in god order. Water getting in ruins bearings and grease getting out ruins drum brakes. Check and adjust brakes, including transmission brake lever operation it could be vital if you get in trouble on a steep incline. Standard fitment A/T tyres are fine for green lanes and mild off road work. Talk to a tyre specialist for mud, rock, snow or sand.
