Freelander diff is mounting by three framed bushes front mount at side of pinion flange, and two rears with black dampers seen above. A broken mount lets the differential move excessively. The front mount has failed, letting the diff flange touch bodywork above. Loosen bolts holding the front mount’s frame to the casing, and then loosen the bolt in sub frame that passes through mount rubber.
Looking from the rear, don’t try to undo the nut at back of the bolt through the sub frame; it’s captive, welding to the sub frame brackets. Put a mark across the dif and prop shaft flanges, then unbolt the prop shaft from the differential and lay it over the exhaust pipe.
To move the differential to get our failed front mount out, the two rear mounts bolted to the rear sides, also need to be released. The diff will drop slightly when the rear mounting’ frame bolt are removed, so be prepared to support it its very heavy.
