Land rover engines have always been robust units but sometime you can’t live with the engine you have for other reasons. Petrol engine are less tolerant of water than their diesel brethren and there are fuel consumption issues unless you fit a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) conversion.
There is plenty of room to fit wide variety of engines into old Land rovers. Big diesels used to be the main replacement, especially for the V8 unit. But now that the price of early 200TDI Discovery is dropping there has been a surge of vehicles being fitted with the 200TDI engine a relatively straightforward swap without the complicated electrics to worry about.
The other common conversion for the Series Land Rover is the Perkins Prima unit as found in the Austin Montego. As with many aspects of land Rovering the sky is the limit. Even Land Rover fitted a Rolls Royce engine into the Series One so there’s no reason why you shouldn’t get adventurous. Just ensure the transmission and the chassis will handle the extra torque, and that the brakes are good enough.
