The Defender’s new 2401CC four cylinder turbocharged diesel engine. It’s proved to be a big hit in ford transit commercial vehicles, and it’s set to be great success in the Defender. Land rover brought you the new Defender. With is raised bonnet to accommodate the new unit and now we can show you what the engine looks like under that power bulge.
It’s strong on torque producing a maximum 265 lb ft(360Nm), a huge 44lb ft more than the output of the outgoing TD5 turbo diesel. But it gets better, while max torque is delivered at 2000rpm; the new engine is tuned to give strong torque from 1500 to 2700rpm. And that’s right where Land rover drivers want it. Maximum power is identical to the TD5 122bhp, but again it’s strong across more of the rev range. More than 90 per cent of peak power is delivered from 2200 to 4350rpm.
