TRANSMISSION AND LUBRICATION

If you’re early Defender or Discovery 1 has a clunk from underneath and between the rear seats when taking up drive after changing from forward to reverse gears, the splines of the gearbox output shaft may be worn. Most have been upgraded by now, but if yours is worn, off road forces could finish it off, and you’ll lose drive.
More lube means less space for water to get in. so apply the grease gun to prop shaft universal and sliding joints until it oozes out of the joint. Check for water in steering swivels, axles and transmission by removing and quickly refitting the drain plugs with a container underneath. If water or emulsified oil comes out, your seal or breathers need attention. Water sinks beneath the oil, giving a false oil level at the filler plug.
