TRANSMISSION

Confirm that axle breather valves and pipes are attached, and that they are clear, if detached, they’ll let water in. if blocked, the oil seal might let in water when the axle drops in deep water. Check that the four wheel drive, low ratio selectors, and freewheel hubs will engage on series model. On for wheel drives, check that difflock and low ratio engine and disengage.
Look for oil leaks from the seal behind the steering swivel housing. A defective seal will let water in, damaging the steering and bearing component and corroding stub shaft splines and CV joint on later on later vehicles. Examine driveshaft rubber boots (such as on freelander) for splits that in water and grit.
The front diff pan is vulnerable to rock impact. Clean it and check for corrosion by tapping with a hammer, looking for oil weep on the lower part.
