The diesel series 3

Tyre diameter is critical to the speedometer reading. The standard tyre size for a series 3 is 205x16, although the larger diameter 7.50x16 was on option on the short wheel bass models and a different speedometer was fitted for this. If a Speedo has the digits 1536 at the bottom right side, it is for standard 88 inch 205x16 type tyres. A Speedo with the number 1376 will read correctly with larger 7.50x 16 tyers.
It seems you have a coolant leak somewhere. You would find coolant in the sump or exhaust only if the head gasket had failed. There are plenty of other places for coolant for leak out. Check all around the heater hose, radiator hose, water pump, heater valve and its Pipework. Also check the heater in self, the radiator cap on both sides when the engine is hot, after first switching the engine off. Check again when the engine is cold, and look for drips on the ground. If coolant are leaking from the tell tale hole under the coolant pump hub, you’ll need to fit a new pump right away. If you identify a leak in the radiator or heater matrix, Barrs leaks should cure it temporarily while you arrange to replace a defective part. The series 3 is probably due and injector overhaul and this may cure the smoke and misfiring. Check the distributor pump
