The Flywheel

Dual mass flywheel
Some early, Td5 flywheel developed surface cracks that, under certain high load conditions, could lead to failure of the flywheel. This is no longer concern because affected vehicles where we call a fitted with an improved flywheel. It’s unlikely that any have slipped through the net and, even if they have, there flywheels would have failed by now recalled vehicles were built between 1/9/98and 30/6/99 with a VIN in the following range.

Flywheel internals can loosen, causing rattling and imbalance. Remove flywheel from crank by releasing these eight bolts.
There have been cases of internal parts failing, causing rattling and imbalance. This creates both noise and vibration. Which may be felt while driving? Broken spring may also allow one flywheel section to rotate too much in relation to the other a problem that may go unnoticed until the transmission is refitted after replacing clutch. The excess movement can cause difficulties when entering the gearbox shaft though the clutch assembly, so it‘s not unknown for a garage quite legitimately to suggest renewing an apparently serviceable flywheel during a routine clutch chain.
