Whereas there was a discernible line of evolution from Discovery 1to 2, the gulf between the 1980s model and the new one is hug. Piloting a 200 Tdi Discovery requires considerable driver input, but the latest model is effortless you need to keep an eye on the speed, or it’ll be surging past the legal limit without you realizing.
Speed isn’t everything, though; you can throw a Discovery 3 round twisty lanes and enjoy the experience. This is down to a mix of cross linked independents air suspension and a longer wheelbase than or the earlier models. The engines have changed again. There’s still a V8 option, this time a 4x4 liter unit, but the diesel has gained yet another cylinder as the TDV6
Both engines are easily torque enough to pill the Discovery and any trailer attached, even though the vehicle’s kerbweight is more than 2.5 tones. Like every Discovery, the Discovery 3 makes a fine tow vehicle in fact, we reckon the TDV6 version is the best Land Rover tow car ever and this is echoed by the numbers you see hauling caravans. While the first Discovery did all the jobs asked of it. Later model have fulfilled these duties with increasing. Purists may say that technology is undermining the skill of the driver, but if this technology encourages more people to use and enjoy Land Rovers for what they were designed, that’s got to be a good thing.
