To get a petrol Land Rover engine to run, you need to basic essential fuel and a spark. To get a petrol Land Rover engine to run well, the petrol has to be mixed with the air at the correct ratio and the spark has to arrive at the right moment to ignite it.
Get the spark timing right, and the air petrol mixed will be burnt as its optimum compression, creating the perfect power stoke. The engine will run well and use fuel efficiently. But if the spark arrives too early it will ignite the mixture as the piston is still on its way up the bore. The symptoms range from some starting because the piston can’t overcome the pressure above it, through detonation which can be heard as a metallic knock from the engine and on to hold piston.
If the spark arrives too late retarded you can expect to find unburnt fuel dribbling out of the exhaust, low power and high emissions. To avoid the last two categories and to get your Land Rover engine running just right, here how to tackle its wait for timing.
