If may sound a bit strange to suggest that off roading will help your Land Rover last forever, given the potential to damage component and bodywork but it does make sense. After all, how many Discovery suffer from seized up linkages because low range and diff lock have never been engaged? The answer is tens of thousands And how many Range Rover haven’t run their suspension through its full travel because they’ve never had to cross a ditch? Land Rover are designed to perform a multitude of task and, if you don’t use them thus, they get used to staying within a certain zone.
Maybe full throttle is never used, so the cable has corroded outside the limits, risking sticking the first time you really boot it. Or the damper haven’t self cleaned the rod inside, so the seals are shredded when they do get used. Even the steering swivels will get gunged up if full lock never used it has even been suggested that Freelander drivetrains will enjoy being able to allow the wheels to slip and that doing so may prolong the life of problematic IRD (intermediate reduction drives) and viscous couplings.
So a spot off roading will actually do your Land Rover some good and it’s good for you as well, because the skill you’ll gain will make you a better drive on the road. You may not live for ever, unlike your Land Rover, but you’ll enjoy life even more.
