Within your budget I would choose a good Tdi. A Td5 I this price range won’t to be such good nick and you may come up against problems that need computer diagnosis. Nothing goes wrong with the Td5 engine ECU unless you wade to deep, and the Td5 is better vehicle with more performance. Both vehicles are tough and reliable but if anything is to go wrong, the 300Tdi will be simpler to put right.
Don’t worry too much about the mileage the condition of the vehicle is important. You may find a higher mileage vehicle that has been well maintained, or a lower mileage one that has been run on a shoestring or neglected.
Nether vehicle type has any particular problems. Just make sure the engine is pulling without misfiring and that there’s no excessive smoke from the exhaust, no noises from the transmission, no coolant loss and no significant oil leaks.
Buying and ex commercial vehicle may be a good idea. Usually, they’re well serviced and parts have been replaced as needed, so you get a well maintained machine. These will have lots of documentation showing what’s been done and when. But beware the vehicles that have been run until they’re about the drop you’ll easily be able to tell the difference. It’s worth paying a good Land Rover mechanic to look one over with you if you’re not too sure of what to look for.
Whatever vehicle you buy, it’ll need a lot of driving to evaluate it before a trip. Suspension damper, brake lining and maybe clutch may need renewal, and maybe the radiator. Check anything that may fail on a long trip, including bushes, exhaust and drive belts and inspect brake, clutch and fuel piping thoroughly.
