There’s so much hype about Defender the basic utility Land Rover that’s its easy to get misty eyed. Defender has a pedigree that’s goes back to the forties, a track record in hostile environments that is unrivalled, and buyer appeal that other 4x4 manufacturers would kill for. It is a legend in its own lifetime. But it’s not perfect. There nothing here but steel and aluminium, rubber and plastic, glass and paint and on a Td5, electronics. Dreaming about driving your Land Rover across the any roads won’t help you on a dealer forecourt. With a Land Rover, it’s so easy to focus on the positives. But if you’re buying you have to check out the negatives. So let’s look beyond the aftermarket bull bars and body colour wheel arch spats.
First what do you want? And what will you be using it for? if you’re not going off road, forget that winch equipped Ninety. If you don’t transport heaps of dirty stuff and a work crew, then you don’t need 130 double cab pickup. The world is full of people driving around in unsuitable Defenders they paid too much for the wrong vehicle. Be honest with yourself and you’ll have a better vehicle later. The big difference, of course, is that Td5 engine. A 300Tdi would give you 111bhp at 400rmp and 195lb ft at 1800rpm, the Td5 will give you 122bhp at 4200rpm and 221lbft at 1950rpm a difference that make for much more flexible driving.
