The number of forward gear has also increased to 12 six in each transfer range. It’s feasible to sit at 70mph on motorways or 60mph with a livestock trailer hooked up to the rear. And you’ll be able to hear the radio while you’re doing it.
But, overall, the vehicle hasn’t change much. The windscreen is taller, giving better visibility, and the overall length has increased slightly thanks to the extra few inches’ wheelbase. But it does look a lot bigger when parked next to a Series III. The solid metallic paintwork is partly to blame for this, though it does sit higher on is coil springs.
The seats have progress to the stage where they offer support for your back as well as isolation from the bumps, but the biggest seating changing in the rear
The short wheelbase versions used to carry up to seven people, while the long wheelbase ones were for 12. These days you’re limited four and seven respectively, and when the bulky seats are in use, there isn’t much load capacity. It’s the shape most people think of Land Rover.
