It wasn’t always this way Pre launch, initial pictures attracted curiosity and the steeped roof gave Land Rover an extra dimension to work with. The so called stadium seating allowed rear passengers to see more ahead of them than the front seat headrests.
The interior was quirky, with golf ball esque finishing on the trim and a removable fabric handbag instead of a solid cubby box. Light colors coupled with copious quantities of glazing gave a bright and airy feel still very much an enjoyable feature of driving a Discovery 1 now.
Two occasional seats were dropped into the sides at the rear, turning the Discovery into a seven seater, even the first three door only models were slightly less easy to live with. The five doors made the Discovery as practical as it could be and the fantastic Tdi engine was more than perky enough to turn the Land Rover into a monster towing motor. It may seem little underpowered and noise these bays but, when launched, it was a revelation the performance of a V8 but the economy of a diesel. No wonder so many were snapped up.
