AFTER YEARS OF UNDERINVESTMENT

We wanted to retain the chassis in its basic development changes. There was a really big effort to use as many standard 109 inch parts as possible, even the brake pipes. We only had to make one new one in the engine bay.
We were under a lot of pressure to move quite fast on testing because we’d lost a lot of time with the 2.2 litre concept. I think the V8 was on test for about 18 months. Although the Series III stage 1 V8 did indeed use many existing components from the parts bin, its transmission was totally different from previous series IIIs. Instead of a part time four wheel drive system, it used the Range Rover’s transmission, powering all four wheels, all the time. This meant that the front axle needed CV constant velocity joints, to prevent transmission wind up.
