WHAT’S THE SUPERCHARGER?

Performance version of petrol engine Range Rover and Rover Sport are fitted with a supercharger. This does the same job as a turbocharger in getting more air into the engine. The difference in the way the air compressor is driven.

As we’ve seen, a turbocharger is driven by engine exhaust gas turning a turbine which drives the compressor, whereas a supercharger is a compressor mechanically driven from the engine and be driven by belt, shaft or chain. Supercharge odes similar job to turbo, but is driven from engine, not exhaust. This belt driven unit is on a Defender V8.
