MAINTENANCE

The VCU internal ball and roller bearings, its two support bearing and prop shaft UJ needle rollers, are sealed for life so no extra lubricant is needed, though the prop shaft UJs are replaceable. The differential and IRD require oil level checks and topping up as necessary at routine service intervals.
Many early models are found short of IRD oil and or containing old black oil that needs changing. Check your handbook for the correct oil, remembering that the gearbox and IRD use different oils that should not be mixed.
Check gearbox and IRD oil levels are after removing the engine under pan. Routine maintenance is confined to visual checks, and topping up the oil levels. Diff levels are checked through plug on back plate. IRD oil level is checked at filler level plug at rear. Oil level should be at the bottom threads of hole. Check for leaks under casing.
