TURBO TALK


Ninety TD turbo from front aluminium compressor casing, center housing cast iron turbine housing and exhaust outlet. Typical internal left to right compressor wheel, shaft, turbine. Oil feed is running down and across centre housing to bearings.

TD5 shows modulator underneath heat shield with air pipe to compressor. Check air inlet outlet hoses at service time. Modulator waste gate rod seen on this TD unit has paint on the adjuster threads so a dealer will spot any boost alterations.

TD5 oil drain pipe is flange to underside of turbo. This leads behind the exhaust via quality flexible braided hose to engine. TD6 Range Rover oil drain pipe connects to engine via rubberized pipe with metal clips check for splits tightness at service time. Freelander 1 TD4 also uses a flexible hose on the oil drain.oil inlet is via a banjo connector on top. Watch for oil pipe leaks.
