It was 1965 Britain’s swinging Sixties were in full swing and, like the Beatles; Land Rover had taken the world by storm. Its only model, the utilitarian Series IIA, was selling well, but the decision makers at Sol hull recognized that there was much room for improvement.
Market research conducted during late 1965 and early 1966 revealed that many of Land Rover’s loyal customers would appreciate a little more style and comfort. This was particularly so in the USA, were it was believed Land Rover could win many new customers if only it would produce something with a touch of luxury.
Land Rover’s new vehicle project Department was put on the case. During this same period, Spen King the department’s chief engineer had been experimenting with a Rover P6 car, even to the extent of driving it off road.
