Specification of TD5 was heavily influenced by stricter emission regulations, plus the difficulty of cooling the five closely packed engine cylinders. TD5 would also have to be quieter, smoother, more powerful, and at least and fuel efficient as the 300TDI it would replace.
It would also share feature with the Land Rover series diesel, on whose TD5 would be built. Making the engine as possible left minimum space between the cylinders for cooling the bore spacing were fairly tight, they ended up with only a very small amount of water between them.
The only way they could accurately machine the block without risking breaking through to the coolant passages was by having the Spanish Fargo Victorio Luzuriaga foundry, which cast the block, do the first machining operation for us, using equipment indexed to the casting.
