DESIGN BRIEF

Engine bay size had already dictated that the new Discovery or Defender diesel would have five cylinders, the maximum that could be squeezed in. that, in turn led to special fuelling requirements because Bosh, the respected supplier of fuelling packages involving rotary fuel injector pumps, did not have a suitable off the shelf system for a five cylinder diesel.
The answer was to use unit injectors, in which each injector has a plunger operated by the camshaft to pressurize the fuel inside the injector before releasing it into the engine eliminating the need for a conventional injection pump. The unit injector concept was already in use but only on truck engine of around 12 litres, so we redesigned the system with Lucas.
Only after confirming the five cylinder configuration needed for the tight Discovery and Defender engine bays and establishing a suitable fuelling system, could engine design begin.
