The plan would have meant all Land Roves enjoying the same dedicated in house engine technology, with spares and expertise shared across the range for years to come. But it didn’t account for British Aerospace selling Land Rover and Rover to revels BMW, which already had its own comprehensive range of diesel engines.
The storm 4 cylinders was axed in favor of BMW’s M 47(TD4) which eventually replaced the L series in Freelander, and BMW’s six cylinder M47 diesel ousted the Storm six cylinder from Range Rover. But development of the storm 5 cylinder engine would continue, if only because Discovery’s engine bay was too short to accept the BMW in line six, a factor that was to have a major influence on the design of TD5.
