FREEZING CONDITIONS

At this time of years we’re interested in preventing the engine freezing up and splitting crankcases and other parts when the ice in the engine thaws and expends. That’s easily assured by draining the coolant, flushing the system through and filling up with the appropriate solution of the antifreeze recommended for your particular engine and specification is especially important on later vehicles.
The trouble is antifreeze solution is thinner than water, and thinner then old tired coolant. So it tends to leak out of any dodgy gaskets or hose connections. The likelihood of leak is increased after flushing the cooling system because any sediment in gasket and hose gaps, which provided a temporary seal, will be washed away.
So check for sign of dried up leaks such as green, red or white deposits, or just wetness, at joints on both the cooling and the heating system before flushing and adding antifreeze.
