CHECK THE SYSTEM

Check the leaks around the entire engine and heater coolant system. You’ll need to check up to the expansion tank or overflow bottle, don’t forget to check the heaters hose connection. Series IIIs often leak her. Watch for signs of leaky heaters matrix too.
If you haven’t used the heater full on for some time, check the valve and controls are functioning, ready for the onset of frost. Remove deposits from inside hose ends using a blunt scraper. Clean the outside of metal connecting tubes with emery cloth. Check condition and tightness of hose clips. Plastic clips used on TD5 and later engines can harden and crack with age and heat.
On 300TDI engines, check for signs of coolant leakage from the coolant pump’s P gasket at front left hand side of engine. 300TDI original type gasket tends to break up. Later full width gasket is more reliable. Most engines have been upgraded by now.
