Talking of which, the nuclear power industry was supposed to eliminate all that. It hasn’t managed it, but it has eliminated high underbonnet temperature in standard or hybrid Land Rovers, especially Land Rovers, off road racers.
How so? Well, the nuclear scientists at Harwell in Oxfordshire have developed Zircotec; a zirconia based ceramic thermal coating originally used in the UK nuclear programme. It’s now available to make your Land Rover’s exhaust system prettier, quieter and longer lasting. The coating is well established in motor racing, mainly to protect critical components from heat.
It also claimed to improve power by retaining heat flow through the exhaust, though I doubt you’d perceive any difference on a standard Land Rover. It can be applied to almost anything, though the most particle application for us is likely to be exhausting manifolds and downstream exhaust components providing a corrosion proof finish that prevents radiant heat from damaging other components.
