THE REAL TD5 ENGINE

At time of its conception TD5 was nothing short of futuristic. It’s eventual place in Land Rover’s evolutionary timeline would be far in the future. The company would need to push the boundaries of diesel technology, not only to ensure the radical diesel emerged ahead of its competitors, but also to meet the predicted and ever tightening emissions regulation of the next decade.
That was 1991, when Land Rover engineers should have been celebrating the success of their new 200Tdi. The next engine, the 300Tdi, was still under development. But in the depths of the design offices the 300Tdi’s replacement was already being schemed on a grand scale.
