Ultimately, TD5’s reputation in global travel and off road adventure has rivaled its success on the tarmac. And despite a fair share of well publicized mechanical catastrophies, then massive percentage of bomb proof TD5s has ensured the big diesel reputation for sheer dependency.
Land Rover is now powered by Jaguar, Ford, and Volvo engines, albeit modified by Land Rover engineers to meet the exceptional demands of off roding. In my view it’s unlikely Land Rover will ever design and build its own engine again.
Properly maintained and used Land Rover diesels have always been capable of covering 250,000miles. TD5’s accurate machine slick engineering tolerances and structural strength suggest it could easily better that figure.
One thing is certain, TD5 will continue for many more years powering thousands of vehicles from early 1997 Discovery through to the very last TD5 Defenders sold during 2007. Its design innovations guarantee that it will ultimately go down in history as one of Land Rover’s most advanced and radical powerhouseses.
