REPLACING THE TURBO

Turbo from different Land Rover models may look alike, but each is different, so always fit the standard kit to maintain performance and engine reliability. Turbo repair is strictly for the specialists who have access to manufacturer’s service kits and essential dynamic balancing equipment. A good specialist will check your engine and turbo to confirm the turbo is actually at fault. You can buy a new or remanufactured turbo or have your own rebuilt.
Variable nozzle types are only supplied new. The turbo charger is easy to remove and refit, but ensure you have made all possible checks before removing the turbo. A removal procedure is similar on all models, but refers to the appropriate manual while doing the job. Unbolt the heat shield, then remove the air inlet piping and disconnect cables and pipe from the actuator and modulator.
Uncouple the oil feed and return pipes and plug their ends with none fray cloth to prevent dirt entering. The unit can then be released from the exhaust downpipe and unbolted from the exhaust manifold.
