What can you do if you want your Land rover to go faster, or indeed slower, at any particular engine speed? Overdrives are a bolt on solutions that allow you to reduce the engine revs at a given speed, making cruising at high speed quieter and more economical. Under drives come in at the other end of the spectrum. They are perfect for low speed work, such as rock crawling. Neither over or under drives will affect the standard gearing when they are disengaged.
Another solution is to replace the gears in the transfer box. The high range gears from a Discovery are a lower ratio than those fitted to a Defender, meaning that top speed on road can be increased without altering the low range gearing. Or you could swap the opposite way are constantly towing heavy trailers. The other option is to change the axle differential ratios.
