As with all safety issue, the problem was reported to the Vehicle and Operator Service fixed the affected vehicles. The wordings of the report for that recall subtly states the flywheel may develop crack that can propagate under certain conditions. That’s significantly different to saying that it will crack.
VOSA notification and subsequent recall and check repair is standard practice with all manufacturers. Land Rover contacts the vehicle’s first owner directly, and subsequent owners via VOSA and DVLC.
Interestingly, the latest batch of safely recalls manufacturers as having dual mass flywheel disintegration problems. Land Rover was right to start using the technology and sort the problems long ago, rather than holding back.
A consolation for any manufacturer on the VSOA recall list is that it will be in good company. Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, Porsche, as well as the mass products, and the Japanese name brands of apparent legendary reliability, all feature.
